Nelson garden succeeds with subtropicals against the odds

When landscape designer James Wheatley first saw the plants his client Leon Page wanted for this Nelson garden he had serious doubts. Palm trees, bromeliads and other subtropicals are fine for Auckland and there may even be some hillside settings in Nelson where you could attempt them, but this was on the flatlands, squarely in the frost zone. It was, to put it mildly, a bit of a punt.

James, a Nelson-based expat Englishman whose resumé includes award-winning exhibition gardens at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Palace flower shows, says he approached the project as an experiment.
